Kennel Cough Remedies As a dog owner and dog lover I can empathize with those other dog lovers who has a dog suffering from Kennel Cough and how helpless it sometimes makes us feel, after all this dog has now become something other than a dog. They have become a member of the family who looks to us humans to help them feel better. But to make you feel better kennel cough isn't too serious and their are remedies and cures for kennel cough which we will talk about a little later on in this article. WHAT IS KENNEL COUGH? A term used to describe what is basically an infection that is both viral and bacterial in nature. The Cough can be compared to a chest cold in humans. As a chest cold can have many different causes. One of the most common causes is from what is called Bordetella Bronchisepticam which is why kennel cough is often times called Bordetella. The Bordetella virus causes inflammation in a dogs voice box and windpipe and their respiratory track also gets lined with muceous and can be considered a form of Bronchitis. It is highly contagious to other dogs so it would be wise to keep your infected pet away from other dog's. This bordetella virus all starts when a dog inhales bacteria or virus particles and they get trapped into their respiratory system. SYMPTOMS If your dog has a persistent dry cough that almost sounds like a honking sound, then this could be a sign that your dog has the virus. Gagging is also another symptom as well as the coughing. Other then the cough you probably won't notice any other symptoms as their appetites usually go unchanged, and their energy level will most likely be the same as well. But with exercise your dog may start coughing up a white foamy phlegm which also could taken as another symptom. Some other symptoms could be a runny nose, a discharge from their eyes and sneezing. In some small dogs the cough is replaced with what is called a reverse sneeze. TREATING AND PREVENTION OF KENNEL COUGH Keep your dog in the bathroom with you when you shower or take a bath as the steam will help soothe their dry irritated breathing passages. Medications is the best treatment and kennel cough remedy and will help speed the recovery period for your dog and will also help to ease their symptoms. Antibiotics that target the Bordetella virus and of course cough medicines also will help to cure kennel cough. You don't want kennel cough to lead to pneumonia so quick action will help to prevent this from happening. You should see improvement in your dog in about a week but three weeks is usually how long it takes for the medication to work and to kill the virus. After that period your dog should be good as new again. Puppies and elderly dogs can take up to six weeks to cure the virus. If after this three to six week period has passed and your dog has been on a treatment plan of medications then it's time to see the vet and see if something else could be preventing your pet from recovering.
